Major Parks & Wild Life Sanctuaries in India
India is rich in flora and fauna. However, due to increasing population and industrial and commercial activities, there has been acute pressure on forests. The Government has taken several steps to check the sharp fall in the number of these species. Among the measures are declaration of certain habitats as national parks and sanctuaries. 101 national parks and 553 sanctuaries have been established till 2019, important ones being given below:
Assam: Kaziranga National Park (know for one-horn Rhinoceroses); Manas Sanctuary.
Jharkhand: Hazaribagh National Park; Betla Tiger Reserve Palamau.
Gujarat: Valvadar National Park, Bhavnagar; Marine National Park, Gir Forests.
Himachal Pradesh: Rohla National Park; Motichur Sanctuary. Jammu & Kashmir: Dachigam Sanctuary.
Karnataka: Bandipur National Park; Bannargheta National Park, Bangalore; Nagorhole National Park, Coorg; Ranganthitto Bird Sanctuary.
Kerala: Eravikulam Rajmallay National Park, Idduki; Periyar Game Sanctuary.
Madhya Pradesh: Kanha National Park; Bandhavgarh National Park, Shahdol; Shivpuri National Park.
Maharashtra: Taloba National Park, Chandrapur; Panch National Park, Nagpur; Borivali National Park, Mumbai; Nawagaon National Park, Bandara; Melghat National Park.
Manipur: Reibul Lamjao National Park.
Odisha: Simlipal, Tiger Sanctuary.
Rajasthan: Sariska Sanctuary; Ghana Bird Sanctuary, Ranthambhor Sanctuary.
Sikkim: Khangchandzenda National Park, Gangtok.
Tamil Nadu: Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary; Guindy National Park, Chennai; Mudumalai Sanctuary; Kalakad-Munden Thurai Reserve.
Uttar Pradesh: Chandraprabha Sanctuary; Dudhwa National Park, Lakhimpur.
